How is managed EBCBT?
Emotional, Bodily, Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (EBCBT)
EBCBT stands for Emotional, Bodily, Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy.
Another new acronym? Yes and no.
Today, the majority of psychologists doing CBT are in fact doing ECBT.
Why the first B? Because, more and more, we’re realizing that to do ECBT effectively, we need to rely on a bodily dimension. So, yes, there are in fact quite a few practitioners who do EBCBT, but I do it consciously and therefore in a structured, thoughtful and controlled way.
In concrete terms
Work is done on each dimension and on the link between each dimension. For example, to regulate emotions, it’s important to practice calming breathing, or to activate the parasympathetic nervous system for recovery by acting on the body. And in order to make this automatic, regular practice is essential. Understanding is not enough to change, it is necessary to act.
The diagram below shows how these dimensions are linked.
So :
Emotions ? If a feeling is a difficulty, a pain symptom, it’s the emotion that expresses itself, and it has a privileged place in therapy.
Body? It’s sometimes the way emotions choose to speak to us, and so it’s also a way of communicating back with them.
Cognitions? We seek to bring out your ideas, thoughts, beliefs, biases and automatisms of thought.
Behaviors? Do, do and do again… to learn and change.
Therapy? But not only, personal and professional development, coaching.
